Experienced firmware engineer - low level embedded SW
Join us in building the foundation of next generation hearing device platforms.
Are you passionate about firmware close to the metal? Do you enjoy understanding how hardware really works and applying your expertise to build stable, efficient real time embedded systems? Would you like your work to make a real difference for millions of people living with hearing loss worldwide?
If that sounds like you, we would love to hear from you.
About the team
You will join our Foundation Firmware area within the R&D Device SW organization — a group of about 25 highly skilled engineers working in three scrum teams. Together we build and maintain the low level firmware that forms the foundation of all Demant hearing device software platforms.
We work closely with hardware, software and production teams throughout every stage of platform development. The atmosphere in the team is informal, friendly, and highly engaged. We believe the best results come from a fruitful team effort. We support each other, provide constructive feedback, and share knowledge and ideas to continuously improve our solutions and reach common goals.
What you will be working on
Our work spans the full development flow of a resource-constrained platform — from IC specification and early bring-up, through development, verification, and production, all the way to product release. This means working in simulations, on FPGA prototypes, and on real silicon as our platforms mature. Our chipsets are internally developed, multi-core network-on-chip solutions designed for ultra-low-power audio. Our firmware platform includes hardware drivers and HAL, RTOS integration, power management, file handling, communication stacks, security, firmware update functionality and more.
You will design, develop, test, and release firmware for our custom ICs, working closely with other embedded software, hardware, production, and verification teams. Your focus will be on delivering advanced functionality with real-time guarantees for the system, while always balancing memory consumption, compute cycles, and power efficiency to meet the high standards of medical devices. This means writing safe, efficient C code that enables our hearing devices to perform reliably in highly resource-constrained environments. You will use and help improve specialized in-house tools that assist the development process, as well as automated regression tests that safeguard stability and performance of our platform as it evolves.
In summary, your main responsibilities will be to:
- Design, develop and test efficient firmware for our chipset platform
- Support hardware and production teams in bring up, calibration and verification
- Contribute to the definition and development of our internally developed ICs
- Implement safe and efficient C code for real time applications
- Help ensure high quality through automated tests and CI/CD
- Participate in team ceremonies and knowledge sharing
What you bring
You hold a degree in Electronics, Computer Engineering, or similar, and you have a solid hands-on experience – at least 3 years – within the following areas of embedded SW development:
- Embedded C programming for memory-, power- and time-constrained systems
- Understanding of processor architectures and MCUs
- Real time operating systems (RTOS) and real-time handling of HW
- Reading HW schematics
- Working with measurement instruments such as logic analyzers or oscilloscopes
- Automated unit and system testing
- Version control systems (git)
- Linux, scripting and custom toolchains
You take pride in building high-quality, maintainable code and are comfortable working in large, shared code repositories with comprehensive testing and a complex build flow. You can work independently, but you also enjoy collaborating within the team and across teams to achieve the best results.
